Confused emotions and thoughts about Sula.

Sula what a smart girl. Pleasure is the way to go. Sula can be in bed with any dude including Jude. To hell with Nel. She is the one that knows Sula well. Is sleeping with your best friends husband okay? A mix of Eva's arrogance and Hannah's self indulgence. Sula she seems to get in everybodys head, annoy them she is a pariah. Sula a girl full of holes; Chicken Little, Hannah burning, and Eva are all strange holes created in her. She fills the holes inside of her with anger and can only feel sorrow when she sleeps with men. What does Sula really need? Why does she courtsey to Shadrack?

  1. Eli,
I think this is an excellent representation of Sula's character. I like your title because that's exactly what I felt when I read about Sula. I wasn't sure whether or not to like her. Should I sympathize with her or call her a devil like everyone else in Medallion? On the one hand I know it's not okay to sleep with your friend's (or anybody's) husband, but on the other hand I can understand why Sula does not know that. Like you said,Chicken Little, Hannah, and Eva, all left holes in Sula. She talks about how the events of Chicken Little and Hannah's remark about love taught her not to trust anybody else or herself. I think because of this Sula can't see relationships and commitments in the same way as other people do. This makes Sula a tough character to side with and a tough one to side against.

  2. I agree with what you said about her being a mix of Eva and Hannah, but I don't know if she got their best traits. I wonder if Sula's friendship with Nel will continue after this? And I wonder if she's sleeping with Shadrack too...
